Nick Padmore dominated the second Masters Historic race on Grand Prix morning at Silverstone. Starting eighth on the semi-reversed grid, Padmore’s ex-Carlos Reutemann Williams FW07 that took second in the 1981 British GP wriggled its way through the traffic to score a win by over three seconds.

Jonathan Kennard’s Brabham BT37 led away at the start, battling with Greg Thornton in his ex-Andretti Lotus 77 in the fight for non-ground effect honours. It wasn’t long though before Padmore moved to the front and then pulled clear with the similar Williams of Mike Cantillon carving through the traffic to secure second place.

Jamie Constable (Tyrrell 011) worked his way to third place although he lost pace late-race but fended off Greg Thornton who claimed non-ground effect honours. Sadly, though, Lotus enthusiast Thornton had an off on the slowing down lap which left his car badly damaged.

Fifth went to Kennard after a spirited defence from Mark Hazell in his Williams FW07 which gained ground after the similar car of Mike Wrigley retired mid-race. A remarkable seventh was Henry Fletcher in his March 761 which failed to complete a lap in practice or qualifying and retired with evil handling from race one, but a great drive from 23rd on the grid put him third in the non-ground effect element of the race.

Behind him came the lone McLaren in the entry hustled along by Kiwi Warren Briggs, while Matt Wrigley made up for his father’s disappointment by taking ninth aboard his March 721 and Andrew Beaumont’s charismatic Lotus 76/1.
