Thank Graeme, still a lot to do. Keep putting off the electronics, but I’m going to have to face that soon.

I have now finished the display case. I have primed it several times, sanding to get a smooth finish before painting it black. I then drilled the holes for the switches and a hole in the rear for the mains power adapter. I masked off the top area as this will be covered with the diorama. I have also placed the switches in to give an idea how it will look.
Now onto the rock part. I originally was going to use bark, but after experimenting with this it didn’t look right for what I wanted to achieve. So, I bought some foam blocks and a heated foam cutter, which by the way is the easiest way to cut this stuff. I experimented with a lot with different types of glues and paints first, before making the decision to use it.
The first picture is how I wanted the rock formation to look like, although it will be a redder/sand colour when finished. I started to carve the block in different pieces, this was a job for outside because of the mess it makes. The last pictures are what it came out like after several hours of carving with a knife and a wire brush. This was then sanded to smooth over in places. Some minor tweaks are needed before I paint the whole thing with watered down PVA glue.

More soon.

This seems a small update, however, this has taken longer than carving the rock formation that I did last week. First, I used the triangular template to work out where the supports will be placed. I then made the three supports out of brass tubing, bending the tubes with a miniature pipe bender. This took some time to work out the angle of the bend. I used the model, attaching it to the tubes for accuracy. The third tube will be placed into the base rather than the rock.
I have also added some smaller rocks, made from pieces of foam, for effect around the main formation. More will be added at a later stage. I then painted the foam rock with watered down PVA glue to seal it. Another coat will be given before any paint and pigments are applied.

More soon.

Fantastic job with the rock formation, looks very realistic. This is going to be a very impressive diorama when finished.
