Don't think I'd be happy either for that price, definitely overpriced and I agree with the reviewer, should not be more than around the £250 mark. I was shocked after watching his review in the second link that the kit doesn't even come with decals for the instrument panels - that's outrageous! I would have expected a sheet of PE panels and acetate gauges for that price and how many ejector pin marks are there in that bomb bay - unbelievably bad!

I bet Peter Jackson of 'Wingnut Wings' will be loving it if he's seen that review. It seems to me that HKM have spent an awful long time trying to get this right …. and then didn't!! Blink Huh ThumbDown

Did you also note the mention of numerous included parts not being noted in the instructions for placement and the engines seem bereft of detail and having the Radiators of a Mk.II than a Mk.I - The Mk.II was the only version of the Lancaster not to be powered by RR Merlin engines. Instead, it used Bristol Hercules radial air cooled engines.

To say this kit has been 4-5yrs in development, it certainly has a few hiccups..

Yes Tom, I did, that is really bad for a kit of this price and something I would expect from a short-run company. I noted also that the painting diagrams at the end were plain black and white? I would have expected those to at least be in colour as Tamiya do for their kits and even Airfix do that nowadays?

Can see this kit becoming a bit of a 'white elephant', especially once the WW kit is released? Companies such as Eduard and Aires are likely going to be very happy with it though as they'll make a mint bringing the HKM kit up to an acceptable standard with their aftermarket parts?

It'll be interesting to see what Daran thinks of his purchase once he has had a proper look at it? ThumbDown

The other interesting thing is that the Wingnut bomber kit gives you two options of engine type: the RR Merlin XX (for the B.Mk.1) or Packard V-1650-1 Merlin 28 (for the B.Mk.III)

The Wingnut Dambuster version only gives the Packard V-1650-1 Merlin 28.

The HKM bomber version only gives you the RR Merlin XX option for the B.Mk.1 - which already seems to have Mk.II radiators - will be interesting to see if its engine is correct for being an XX?

I suspect not Tom, it's pretty obvious that they haven't done their research properly and just copied what they found on the full size aircraft that they had access to? The reviewer stated that the engines were pretty basic in the level of detail so probably a generic Merlin regardless of it's mark? Sort of if it looks like a Merlin then it must be a Merlin - pretty poor effort really?! Blink Glare

Sounds like it's descending into pile of (expensive) rubbish quite quickly! Makes me wonder why it took them about five years to bring it to a point of sale with delay after delay on the release date? Just wondering if there were so many faults with it that they spent that time correcting them and in the end gave up to release it with the faults that went uncorrected? Probably got it out unfinished because they needed to start recouping some of their huge outlay?

Certainly going to put people off buying it who might have done, but will now wait for the seemingly much better WW kit.

Am sure the Wingnut Lanc kits will be just as just as scrutinised and a bit unfair to suggest the HKM is a pile of ‘rubbish’, am sure that many will turn out a cracking display item. Though with Peter Jackson’s Wingnuts team also being involved with the Dambusters remake, it’s likely the Wingnuts Lanc versions will have the edge.

Yeah, I agree, maybe that was a bit strong Tom, my comment, though it certainly doesn't look like it is up to expectations after such a long wait for the release. I would have thought it would be almost faultless, but not so it seems?

No doubt there will be some nice display models created from the kit as you say, but it will take a bit of work to correct some of the faults if accuracy is desired?

Iconicair has released a resin 1/32 Dambuster conversion set for the HKM 1/32 Lancaster bomber

Shame they didn’t realise that the Dambuster Lancaster’s had the Packard V-1650-1 Merlin 28 and that the HKM kit has a Merlin XX - both are very different engines hence why Wingnuts only provide the Packard V-1650-1 Merlin 28 with their Dambuster kit...
Not only that, other elements of the HKM Lanc also need to be converted to make it a Dambuster, such as creating an infil plate for the mid upper gun turret which is not present on the Dambuster 464 provisioning Lancaster

They're some beautifully detailed parts from Iconicair, but as you say Tom, a few omissions if it is to sold as a complete conversion kit? Unless the other parts, such as an engine kit are to come as a later release maybe?

You mean a “conversion” of the conversion set Laugh LOL possibly a later updated set if/when they realise though I doubt it. It also means you can’t also use the clear fuselage sides.

The modifications to the “464 Provisioning” Dambuster Lancasters was extensive and covered major items such as the fitting of the more powerful Packard Merlin 28 engine, removal of the dorsal gun turret, removal of bomb bay doors, fitting of a wind deflector for the mine, support arms, release mechanism and an ex submarine hydraulic motor and belt drives to spin the mine.

Much smaller changes included the fitting of front gunner stirrups to keep his feet out of the bomb aimers face, spent case collecting bags (to stop them falling on the bomb aimers head) and strengthened oleo legs and bomb beams.

There is word that the HK kit has the red gear mtce locks molded onto the U/C retraction struts, something used only on post war aircraft. These locks prevent inadvertent gear retraction on the ground. They shouldn't be there unless you're modelling your kit in major overhaul or restoration.
