I have finally got back to doing some more work on this. I have now completed the hull planking - still needs filling and sanding - and have fitted the stern frames. I have also fitted (but not glued) the bow hanger floor.

I am now awaiting delivery of some epoxy resin which I will use to coat the inside of the planking to strengthen it before sanding the outside to shape.

Derek,Alan - thanks for looking in.

Just a brief update - the epoxy arrive and the inside of the hull was duly coated and left to dry for 24 hrs. The central hanger floor was then fitted (not glued) and the stern block glued in place.

The next job is to mark out and fare the underside of the hull.

I have temporally fitted all the hanger floors, Pic 1, and marked and sanded the curves at the bottom of the hull. I then roughly sanded down all the planking and removed most of the steps between the bow/stern blocks and the planking, Pics 2, 3 & 4.

I then applied filler to the worst areas of the hull, Pic 5, followed by sanding this down and then applying an initial coat of primer to show up the areas that still needed more work (plenty of them). The primer was then sanded back to show these areas more clearly, Pic 6.

After reading through the instructions for the next few issues – which had you applying the prop shaft A frames and bilge keels – I decided I would veer from said instructions and finish off the hull first as I was certain these fittings would not survive further sanding of the hull.

I have, therefore, started to shaped and fit the armour belt extension pieces, Pic 7. The step in the planking at the bow was first cleaned up, Pic 8, and the forward two pieces of the armour test fitted in place, Pic9. These pieces were then glued in place, Pic 10.

After reading Andy’s (ARPurchase) build diary and checking my Akagi plans, the stern armour belt was extended by 44mm, taking it to just short of the stern block, Pic 11.

Now as far as the hull goes it is a case of sand/fill/sand etc. until I am happy with the shape and finish.

I will start to assemble the hangers between sanding sessions.

That’s it for now

I`m afraid i can only see a few of the pics (most of them won`t Show up) - but the ones i see look great!

This is about the point i put my AKAGI aside to finish the Vic first - so i`will be following with great interest as this build moves along!
Greetings,
Walter

Thanks for the interest guys, much appreciated.

Just a brief update.

I have progressed to building the main bow hanger and the port bow hanger, (waiting for the weekend to do any more on the hull so I can hopefully get outside in daylight to do the sanding).

Pic 1 shows the main bow hanger framework assembled. The rounded end is clad with planking strips laid vertically and the sides with sheet material. Pic 2 shows the cladding in progress.

Pic 3 shows the main hanger completely clad, but not sanded, together with the completed frame of the port hanger. The curved side of the port hanger is then clad in a strip of very thin and flexible wood and pic 4 shows the completed hangers after sanding – a little filler was needed along some of the joints between the planks on the curved bow section.
