Hi again, here's another update on the build.

STAGE 02

This one is all about building the lower deck and fixing it in place.
To start, the 2 halves were cut from the parts board, given the once-over with a sanding block to smooth off any burrs, and finding the veneer strips to line those parts with. The veneer, 0.5mm x 4mm is applied strip by strip starting at the straight edge where the 2 halves join and working outwards until each half was completely covered.
The 2 parts were left to dry then using a new scalpel blade the excess veneer was trimmed away and the edges smoothed down with a miniature diamond file and sand paper. The surface of the veneer then needed smoothing off, for this job I chose to use various grades of 'Micro Mesh' starting at 1500 and working down to 4000.
Once I was happy with the surface, I followed the instructions and used an automatic pencil to draw the lines of the planks, measured out 34mm along each plank ( which the instructions say is the correct length ), and used the pencil again to spot in the planking nails.
Finally, the 2 parts were given a coat of varnish, (I chose to use light oak as I already had some), left them to dry, and after a dry test fitting glued them in place on the frames. They fitted the first time and needed no adjustments for correct fit.
That completed stage 02 of the build.
Thanks for looking in.
More to follow soon.
Happy building
David

Another update, thanks for the kind comments and let's begin.

STAGE 03 (part 1)

Welcome back. Stage 03 is split into 3 sections in the instructions, but I think I can narrow that down to 2
The 1st part is all about adding strengtheners to the hull by first of all adding another bulkhead to frame #6 followed by glueing 2 stiffeners into the bow section between frames #3,#4 and #5 after first test fitting them and finding they needed a gentle bend in them so out came the bending pliers and several crimps later the bend was sufficient to glue them in place.
2 more stiffeners were glued into place either side of the bow and a further 2 more stiffeners fitted between frames #9,#10,#11 and #12.
Work then continued on the stern by adding 3 horizontal sections one above the other.
That finishes off stage 02 part 1.
Part 2 will follow on tomorrow.
Hope you are liking the build so far, thanks for looking in and keep the comments coming,
Happy building
David

Hi
@Markwarren
Thanks for looking in on this build Mark, and for the comment (you're welcome anytime). You should try a sailing ship at some point - if that's where your interest lies (I know some of us prefer planes to ships) - they can give another dimension to our modelling skills.
Hope you look in again soon.
Happy building

Hi Phil W, Glad you could look in and thanks for the kind words. Your U-boat build is coming along fantastically now and all that extra detail you're putting in will make for a truly unique build. Although I haven't been posting on your diary very often, I look in every time you post an update and sit back and admire your skill and patience.
Happy building

MICRO SHAPERS
Hi everyone
The 'Micro shapers' that I ordered from AL arrived in today's post and I'm very pleased with them. They are made from stainless steel which made them not the easiest things to cut from the sprues but the quality is top notch. Each of the tools has a varying number shapes between 12 and 16 for different sizes of plank, and will need to be used in several places on the 'L'Hermione La Fayette' build.
Here's a few images of each of the tools so you can get an idea of the variety of shapes that can be acheived.
Happy building

New update,
Thanks to all who have posted their kind words here. Keep them coming.

STAGE 3 (PART 2)

Hi again,
According to the instructions for this build, section 3:1,3:2 and 3:3 are all about fitting other smaller parts onto the 3 horizontal transom pieces in order to give it more shape and to further strengthen it.
Part 3:3 sees the fitting of 2 stiffening pieces under the transom on either side of the keel.
I don't really know how to describe the process without boring you all so I'll let the following images do the talking.
That concludes stage 3.
The next update - stage 4 - is the job we all either love or hate - fairing the hull.
So we'll catch up with that soon.
Happy building

Hi David, looks like you're making some great progress, looking good....

Difficult to tell from your pics and perhaps you haven't glued this but, the top horizontal former attached to part 29 shouldn't be glued to the side of the hull, it needs to be left free as you have to fit a plank in between the former and the hull when you come to the planking stage.... Have a look at my post number 27 and pic 54 of the instructions and you'll see what I mean.....

http://forum.model-space...sts&t=22632&p=2

Look forward to seeing your next update...

Regards

Alan
