Stage 119 Contents: Doors and Mouldings, Decorations.

Retrieve the decorations C160, C161 and C162 from stage 118. Remove any burrs or flash, then assemble the decorations and apply a coat of metal primer. Now follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint these decorations.

Assemble the upper and lower starboard galleries in the same way as you did for the port galleries. Refer to the instructions for the placement of the decorations.

Prepare the starboard side of the hull for the fitting of the galleries in the same way as you did for the port side.

Hold the lower port gallery in position and mark a line on the hull, through the opening in the gallery roof. Paint the area immediately around the line with either black or brown. Repeat on the other side of the hull.

Glue the upper galleries in position, making final adjustments to get the best fit possible and ensuring they are aligned from the stern. Once dried, touch up areas of the paintwork where needed. Now glue the lower galleries into place, ensuring they are aligned like the upper galleries. Use some putty to fill the small gaps between the galleries and the transom and then touch up the paint.

Take decorations C151 from stage 108 and glue them to the lower part of the upper gallery. The figures feet should rest on the decorations below. Repeat the process on the lower part of the upper starboard gallery using decorations C162 painted in this stage.

Cut two lengths of 2x5mm wooden strip to fit across the transom, between the galleries and joining the yellow bands. Glue the strips in place then paint the outer edge yellow and the tops and bottoms red. Cut a length of 2x5mm wooden strip to fit under the two lions. Sand the strip until its about half the thickness then bend it slightly. Paint the outer edge yellow and the rest red then glue the strip into place.

Retrieve decorations C38, C40, C41, C42 from stage 76 (for the Port Column), and decorations C38, C39, C41 and C42 from stages 56, 57 and 62 (for the starboard column). Glue the decorations together to form the two columns, ensuring the decorations are facing the correct way around. Glue the columns onto the sides of the transom.

Now follow steps 17 – 20 of the instructions to fit all the stern decorations.

Remove the doors and the mouldings from the fret supplied in this stage. Remove any burrs or joins from the edges the apply a coat of metal primer to the doors. Follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint the doors.

Store any unused parts in a bag labelled with this stage number.

This stage is now complete.

Hi Alan,

Well, I am just blown away with your build Alan and your painting is so precise it reminds me of your SOT'S build and that was amazing.

Stage 120 Contents: Deadeyes, Decorations and Dummy Cannons.

Retrieve two of the moldings supplied and primed in stage 119. Paint the moldings red (RAL3020) and when dry, paint the relief parts yellow (RAL1023).

Retrieve the eight decorations C169 and the four decorations C165 from stage 119. You also need the decorations C166, C167 and C168 from this stage. Remove any burrs or flash, then apply a coat of metal primer and leave to dry. Now follow the painting guide provided within the instructions to paint all these decorations.

Now retrieve the seven painted doors from stage 119. Locate the positions of each of the doors against the bulkheads and then glue them into place.

Cut a length of 0.5x5mm wooden strip to fit between the main deck doors. Trim the strip to 2mm wide and paint it red (RAL3020). Mark two lines, 2mm apart, in the centre of the strip and glue the strip onto the deck between the two doors. Cut a 2x2mm wooden strip to the same length as decoration C169. Paint the strip red then glue it against the bulkhead, between the lines marked on the strip. Glue a decoration C169 in the centre of the space between the door and the post just fitted. Then glue two more decorations C169 at equal distances on each side of the first one. Glue the three other decorations C169 to the wall on the other side of the post.

Cut a length of 2x2mm wooden strip to fit on top of the decorations between the two doors. Cut a 0.5x5mm wooden strip lengthways to half its width, then cut it to the same length as the 2x2mm strip you just cut. Paint the new strip yellow (RAL1023), and the 2x2mm strip red (RAL3020). Glue the red strip onto the tops of decorations C169 then glue the yellow strip on top of the red. Glue decorations C168 and C166 up against the sides of the doors then glue decoration C167 in the centre, in between them.

Cut a length of 2x5mm wooden strip to fit between the two doors, on top of the decorations just fitted. Cut a length of 2x2mm wooden strip to the same length, paint the strips red and yellow then glue them together. Cut one of the moldings to the same length as the strips and glue it to the front of the yellow strip. Now glue the assembly on top of decorations C166, C167 and C168, between the doors.

Cut a length of 0.5x5mm wooden strip to fit between the quarterdeck doors and trim it to 4mm wide. Paint the strip red (RAL3020) and glue it in place between the doors. Glue the four decorations C165 onto the strip, spaced equally between the doors. Cut a length of 2x5mm wooden strip to fit between the doors and trim it to 4mm wide. Paint the strip red and then cut and glue a section of molding to fit to the front of the strip. Glue the piece on top of the four decorations C165.

Cut a length of 0.5x5mm wooden strip to fit between the aft most door and the bulwark. Trim the strip so that it is 2mm deep, then paint one side red and one of the edges yellow. When the paint is dry, glue the strip in place. Take the last two decorations C169 and file the bottoms of the decorations so that they will rest on the strip, flush with the bulkhead. Glue the decorations in place ensuring they are evenly spaced.

Cut another 2x5mm strip to 2x2mm, to fit between the door and the bulwark. Paint the strip red then glue a piece of molding, trimmed to size, along one edge. Glue this strip into position on top of the two decorations C169.

Store any unused parts in a bag labelled with this stage number.

This stage is now complete.

Stage 121 Contents: Wooden Strips, Windows and Mast Fittings.

Remove the two windows from the fret, smooth the edges and apply a coat of metal primer. Paint the windows light grey (RAL9002) and when dry, paint the edges yellow (RAL1023). Glue the windows over the window openings in the transom.

Take decorations C7 and C8 from stage 4 and glue them into the centre of decoration C11 from stage 19. Retrieve the decorations C9 and C10 from stage 9 and glue them onto the decoration C11, either side of the shield. Glue the assembly to the transom, centered between the windows. Retrieve the six knight decorations, assemble and glue in position as shown in step 8 of the instructions. Now retrieve the four remaining moldings from stage 119 and paint them in the same way as you did with the first two. Use two of the moldings to from a line across the transom just above the heads of the knights. The join between the two should be centered above the center decoration. Cut the outer ends flush with the edge of the gallery bottom.

Retrieve decorations C37 from stages 24, 53 and 77. Glue them between the tops of the decorations C11, C13 and the yellow strip above. Cut and fit the remaining two moldings to fit between the stern post and the side walls at the transom, on the line where the red and brown paints meet.

Remove the hinges RH3, RH4, RH5 and RH6 from the fret received in stage 60. Prepare them in the same way as RH1 and RH2 in stage 60. Retrieve the rudder from stage 93 and mark lines onto it at the points shown in step 15 of the instructions. Test-fit one of the hinges RH3 above the lowest pencil mark shown, adjust the fit if necessary and then glue into place. Test-fit and glue the rest of the hinges in place, the bottom edges of the hinges should be flush with the pencil lines. Retrieve the nails supplied with stage 60 and gently hammer one into each hole of the rudder hinges.

Place the rudder against the stern post, inserting the top of it into the opening at the bottom of the transom. If the rudder doesn’t fit into the opening then use a file to open it more. Take one of the 1.5 x 1.5mm strips from stage 83 and cut it into seven 5.5mm lengths. Retrieve the four RH1 and three RH2 prepared hinges from stage 60. Glue the 7mm pieces of wood into the hinges then paint them black. Now follow steps 23 – 28 of the instructions to fit the hinges to the stern post.

Retrieve parts RH7 from stage 60, bend them to fit around the rudder head at 12mm and 18mm from the top. Trim off the excess and glue them into place. Now fit the rudder into position, inserting the head into the opening and engaging the hinges. The hull paint may have been damages during the fitting of the rudder so check the area and retouch any paint as necessary. Paint the heads of the nails black.

Glue decoration C22 from stage 23 to the aft side of the rudder just below the lower band. Now retrieve the two decorations C12 from stage 7 and 18, glue then to the transom aligning the holes with those next to the gun ports.

I chose at this stage to remove the rudder to prevent damage during the remainder of the build process.

Store any unused parts in a bag labelled with this stage number.

This stage is now complete.
