This is my first build diary of the Amati 1/200 Bismarck

I collected this model over a 3 year period through the Hatchette partworks, being a novice modeller, I put off starting this model for some time. My modelling experience up until this point had been plastic kits, just built out of the box and hand painted.

The Amati kit at the time was probaly the best out there if not the only one, however there has been a recent 1/200 Bismarck plastic kit from Trumpeter brought to the market along with various after market photo etch and resin upgrades.

With my reluctance to start plus finding free time because of my job I believe this has worked in my favour because i can now enhance the Amati kit even further with all the extra upgrades now available, because i have not progressed too far with the build.

However i did start the model towards the end of 2008 up until mid 2009, then only working on it ocasionally until this present time. I will upload a batch of photos every so often to the forum until the current state.
Current Builds: Amati 1/200 Bismarck, Airfoil 1/600 HMS Nelson

To Build: Amati 1/200 HMS Hood, Amati 1/250 Titanic, Artesania Latina 1/48 HMS Surprise, Artesania Latina 1/50 Scottish Maid, DeAgostini 1/84 Sovereign of the Seas

These are the first photos of the build which I started I 2008, the first stages were to build the frame work for the planking to sit on and then to plank the first layer over the ribs.

The next stage of the build shows I have given the hull a sand down, all the over hanging planking has been trimmed ready to glue on the resin parts. I have started work on the deck and planked up to the deck level at the bow and stern.

Hi Alan,

Thanks, I found having all the parts and build guide stored up let me decide on the best order to build the model because sometimes if you build it as you get the parts its not always the best order to do it. I'm also collecting the Hood and I think its going to be best to start it once i've got all the parts, plus I don't have the time to start it at the moment!

Time for the second layer of planking, these strips were a lot thinner than the first layer but its just to give the hull extra strenth. This was quite a tedious and long process as many of you probably know. I have also added the stern, anchor and prop shaft exit resin parts.

The basic hull is almost complete, the next stage was to add the port and stbd keel, the strips with pre drill holes for the top row of portholes, the bow resin part, and a few other parts. Once this was complete the hull was given a quick sand and filler was used to fill the largest gaps.

Next it was time to start on the superstructure, this is made up of the fwd and aft sections, once the wooden sections had been glued in place, port holes were drilled and resin parts added to the aft section. The first photo etch parts were also added. I made my own foot holds on the rangefinder tower from wire, the kit part didn't really portray the foot holds.
